  1. BALZAN PRIZE 2017

Bina Agarwal has been awarded the 2017 Balzan prize for her work on women in agriculture and gender studies. It comes with an award of 750,000 swiss francs.

The citation reads: “For challenging established premises in economics and the social sciences by using an innovative gender perspective; for enhancing the visibility and empowerment of rural women in the Global South; for opening new intellectual and political pathways in key areas of gender and development“. http://www.balzan.org/en/prizewinners/bina-agarwal

The ceremony will be on November 17, 2017 in Bern.

This is one of the world’s top prizes. Four Balzan prizes are given annually “to people or organizations who have made outstanding achievements in the fields of humanities, natural sciences, culture, as well as for endeavours for peace and the brotherhood of man.”

2017 LOUIS MALASSIS INTERNATIONAL PRIZE FOR AN ‘OUTSTANDING CAREER IN AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT’.

This prestigious prize of 20,000 euro is given once every two years by the Agropolis Fondation, Montpellier, France, to recognize individuals for their exemplary contributions to enhance food and agricultural systems sustainability, food security and poverty reduction.

  1. FRENCH CIVILIAN DISTINCTION, OFFICER OF THE ORDER OF AGRICULTURAL MERIT, GOVERNMENT OF FRANCE, 2017

This was conferred on Bina Agarwal by Ambassador of France to India, on 5 July 2017 in New Delhi. Commending Prof. Agarwal at the investiture ceremony, Ambassador Alexandre Ziegler said, “Your pioneering work on gender inequality in property and land, as well as on environmental governance, has had global impact. These issues are of significant concern internationally and have now been included even in the UN’s sustainable development goals. I am delighted to bestow this honour on you on behalf of the French government.”
