President’s Message – June 2016

6th June 2016

Dear member of the Oxbridge community,

This is an important communication, so please do have patience and read to the end!

The Annual General Meeting of the Oxford and Cambridge Society of India (OCSI) shall be held in New Delhi on 3rd September 2016. The Notice and agenda papers for the AGM will be sent out to members in August. Do block the date in your calendars nonetheless.

The two-year term of your present Executive Committee and Office Bearers comes to an end at the AGM on 3rd September and therefore there will be need to elect a new group to handle the affairs of the Society. The current President wishes to inform you that he will not be standing for re-election and will be handing over office along with the Committee, as is a good and well-established convention of the Society.

The last couple of years have seen many new members join the Society and others may not quite recall the process of OCSI Elections, so I am sending out this email well in time.

Only members of the Society (and not all Oxford/Cambridge alumni) are eligible to stand for election, nominate someone, or indeed have a vote. The list of members as on 1st June 2016 can be found on our website at: Please do check your name (and do rebuke us if we have not spelled it correctly!). If you feel that your name has been inadvertently left out and that you are indeed a member, please write to Mr Uday Walia, Secretary of OCSI, at: If you would like to become a member, please do look at the relevant portion of the website at:

As per the Constitution of the Society, the Office Bearers and the Executive Committee members will hold a term of office of two years and will be constituted as below:

Elected members –

  • The President
  • The Vice President
  • The Secretary cum Treasurer
  • Six members of the Executive Committee

Nominated members –

  • Up to two members of the Executive Committee (nominated by the incoming President)

There is a convention that the previous Vice President is chosen to be the next President of the Society.

Mr Ravi Bhoothalingam has kindly consented to being the Returning Officer.

Elections will be held on 3rd September 2016, at the time of the AGM, for all nine elected postions, i.e. The President, The Vice President, The Secretary & Treasurer, and Six Executive Committee members.

Any member of the Society is eligible to stand for any position. However, a member may only put himself or herself forward for a single position in a particular year. Members wishing to stand for elections must send their names and positions sought for to Mr Ravi Bhoothalingam at his email ID: Those wishing to stand for the office bearer positions must have their candidature proposed and seconded by two members of the Society. This is not required for offering yourself as a candidate for an Executive Committee position. Nominations for all positions will close at 6pm India time on 31st August 2016.

The list of OCSI members will be frozen for the purpose of this election on 31st July 2016. All corrections, additions, or deletions must be done before that date for the limited purpose of the election.

I would like to add a personal note here, that it has been an absolute privilege and a pleasure to serve on the present committee and to have received such outstanding support from the wider membership. As all positions are open for election this year, I would urge members who wish to contribute and serve the Society to put themselves forward for one or the other position. It is with your support and active participation that the Society will move forward. Do remember, however, that the President is chosen by convention and should be elected unopposed.

A final word. Attendance at AGMs has been dismal, with quorum not being met on the first call in living memory. Please do try and make it to this year’s AGM on 3rd September and reiterate your support to the Oxford and Cambridge Society of India.

With thanks, regards and best wishes,

President, The Oxford and Cambridge Society of India
